A bird box made by our students for Thornberry Animal Sanctuary and Manvers Lake

Joinery Students Build Bird Boxes for Local Sanctuary

20 June 2025

Our talented Pathways to Joinery students have recently put their skills to use to support local wildlife, creating handcrafted bird boxes that were donated to Thornberry Animal Sanctuary and Manvers Lake.

As part of a practical project to enhance their woodworking skills, students designed and built a number of bird boxes with the aim of giving back to the community and helping to protect local bird populations. The bird boxes were delivered to Thornberry Animal Sanctuary and Manvers Lake, where they’ll be used to provide safe nesting spots for a variety of bird species.

We were delighted to receive some fantastic feedback from Thornberry Animal Sanctuary, who shared their appreciation:

“We’re thrilled to share that we now have two brand new bird boxes on site, thanks to the incredibly talented students from the Pathways Joinery course at Rotherham College!

A huge thank you to the students for their thoughtful work and generous gift.”

The sanctuary praised the students’ craftsmanship and thanked them for their contribution to the wellbeing of the animals in their care. The bird boxes will be placed around the site to encourage more wildlife to settle and thrive at Thornberry.

This project is a great example of how our students not only develop hands-on vocational skills but also learn the value of community involvement and environmental responsibility.

Well done to everyone involved!
