Art and Graphics Students Celebrate Yorkshire Coast Through Creative Poster Designs
Students from Rotherham College’s Art and Graphic Design department have been showcasing their creative talents in a project inspired by the beauty and character of Yorkshire’s coastal towns.
As part of a special brief, students were challenged to research, explore and respond visually to various towns and villages along the Yorkshire coastline, including Whitby, Scarborough, Robin Hood’s Bay and Filey.
Their task was to create a travel-style poster that captured the unique identity, culture and atmosphere of their chosen location.
The project gave students a real-world design brief and allowed them to explore techniques in digital illustration, traditional media, typography and layout.
The final outcomes are a vibrant collection of posters that celebrate the heritage, charm and natural beauty of the region’s coastal destinations, and are now currently on display at the local train station in the heart of Rotherham.
Kerry Peters, Northern regional director, said:
“The posters these young artists have produced are brilliant and we would like to thank them for all their hard work.
“We asked them to come up with captivating designs – in the style of the iconic British Railways adverts – and they have surpassed our expectations.
“The students should be incredibly proud of this display, which advertises destinations that people can travel to by train in Yorkshire.”
Richard Lyon, Art and Design curriculum team leader at Rotherham College, said working on the posters had been “a valuable and positive experience for our students”.
Richard said:
“Our train journey to the Yorkshire coast enabled students to take great photos to inspire their ideas.
It also took their experience beyond the classroom, developing their independence and confidence in using the rail network.”
The project not only helped students build their portfolios and develop industry-standard skills, but it also encouraged them to connect with local culture and gain inspiration from their surroundings.
The Yorkshire coastline project stands as a proud showcase of the talent, creativity and dedication of Rotherham College’s Art and Design students. From research and concept development to final presentation, each student demonstrated a professional approach and a unique artistic voice.
Their work not only highlights their growing skills but also reflects their potential to thrive in the creative industries. The success of this project is a clear example of the high standards and ambition our students continue to achieve.
Well done to all learners that were involved!
